Born: Johann Christus Gnass - Rajensdorf, Schlesweig-Holstein, District of Bordesholm - Germany
John was born near Kiel, Germany and immigrated to America in 1915 with his friends Herman Stuheimer and William Reinhold.
John was an electrician and a member of the Local 56 IBEW. He worked on many of the landmark buildings in downtown Detroit and Toledo. He married Frances (Barnhart); a niece to the woman who was running the boarding house where he lived on June 26, 1917. They had six children (Ethel Moreen, Russell, John (Jack), Vernon, Marvel LaRene and Mervyn.) The death of their first born child, Ethel in 1936 was a severe loss to the entire family. He is the brother of the late Auguste (Gnass) Hoier, Charlotte (Gnass) Kolloche and Anne Gnass.
After retirement John's favorite pastime was tinkering around in either the garage or basement work room. He and Frances both enjoyed gardening and visits from the grandchildren.
When Frances discovered they were going to be a grandparents for the first time, she decided that with having her mother living in the home it was going to get very confusing being just 'Grandmother.' So she decided she wanted to be called 'Honey' by her grandchildren and her husband was to be called 'Pop.' And so, this is how they were affectionately called by their 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
