Stella was the daughter of Allen O. Grantham and Mary Forrest Anderson. She had four sisters and five brothers. including one brother who died in infancy. She was raised in Greenville and Wichita Falls and married Wayne Igo on 14 Sep 1939 in Walters, Cotton County, Oklahoma. They had two sons, Gilbert Reagan Igo and John Harvey Igo.

Stella, Wayne and the boys moved to Lubbock, Texas around 1950, where they lived until Wayne died of a heart attack in 1966. Stella worked in sales at Furr's Family Center and J.C. Penney Department Store.

Stella remarried in 1969 to Douglas "Bill" Mains and they moved to New Orleans where Bill worked on an offshore drilling rig. They moved to Brazil in 1971 and Stella was again widowed in 1973, when Bill was killed in an accident on a drilling rig offshore of Brazil. Stella then returned to Lubbock. She married Jim Bates in Lubbock and they were later divorced. Except for about two years in Houston 1997-1999, Stella remained in Lubbock until her death from Alzheimer's disease.

Stella kept all her family and friends entertained with her wonderful story-telling talent. She was well-known for her ability to sell anything to anyone and for her "gift of gab." She was a very skillful cook and gardener. She loved cooking for family and friends and was always kept everyone well-stocked with vegetables from her huge garden. She also loved to fish. Stella had a gift shop in her home where she sold fine collectibles, such as figurines and dolls.

Stella was preceded in death by her three husbands, Wayne Igo, Douglas"Bill" Mains and Jim Bates; her parents, Allen and Mary Grantham; her brothers, Leslie, Allan, Claude, Hagan and Needom Grantham; and her sister, Mattie Grantham Duke.

She was survived by her sons, Gilbert and John; her beloved grandchildren; Natalie and Ashley and her adorable great-grandchildren; Nicholas and Zoe; and her sister, Dorothy Grantham Willard.
