Wayne was the son of Gilbert Reagan Igo and Elsa Jane Harvey of Red River County, Texas. He, his sister Cecil, and his older brother, Ernest Gilbert Igo, were raised in Panhandle, Texas and later moved to Wichita Falls.

He and Stella Corinne Grantham, both residents of Wichita Falls, Texas, were married on 14 Sep 1939 in Walters, Cotton County, Oklahoma, by Percy E. Haley, Jr., a Baptist Minister. The marriage ceremony was witnessed by Stella's brother, Claude Clarence Grantham, and Waynes's brother, Ernest Gilbert Igo. They had two sons, Gilbert Reagan Igo, named after his grandfather, and John Harvey Igo, named after his uncle. The family moved to Lubbock, Texas around 1950.

Wayne was a master welder and served in the US Navy in World War II, enlisted 1 Apr 1944 and discharged
15 Nov 1945. He was skilled in many areas and could repair any kind of automobile, install or fix any plumbing or electricity and could build and remodel like a professional.

He was the type who never met a stranger and was always helping family, neighbors and even indigent people on the street.
