Hiram was the son of Cornelius Compton and Rebecca Jane Patterson. He married Nancy Jane Belcher. They were the parents of: William L., Ellen Rebecca Belcher, Samuel Watson "Watt," Louvenia Billips, Cornelius Moses "Neely," Alma Oshie Crutchfield, and Lillian Aurelia French. The property in Falls Mills that he inherited was purchased from his heirs for construction of the Falls Mills Dam. The Compton (Hiram) Family Cemetery is probably located under the Falls Mills Lake.

Hiram was a farmer and a member of the Macedonia Methodist Church.

(Obituary from the "Bluefield Daily Telegraph," Bluefield, WV, 29 Mar 1939:)
Hiram Compton, 89, widely known resident of Falls Mills, died early Tuesday at the home of his daughter Mrs. Floyd Billips in Bland County. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Falls Mills this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and interment will be made in Falls Mills cemetery. The Rev. Elmer W. Dean will conduct the services and will be assisted by the Rev. Barberry.
Mr. Compton's wife preceded him to the grave 30 years ago. He was a native of Falls Mills and a member of a pioneer family. He is survived by 3 daughters and 2 sons, Mrs. J.J. Belcher of Princeton, Mrs. Giles French of Abbs Valley, Mrs. Billips of Bland County, Neely Compton of Beckley and Watt Compton of Rock. He was an uncle of C.G. [Charles Graham] Belcher of Bluefield, Virginia.

Hiram had a fun-loving and humerous personality and was loved by all. He and Nancy raised their children on the old Moses Belcher house on Compton Road, just to the left after one crosses the bridge over Mud Fork.
