John was the son of Henry Calfee and Eleanor Bezam. He married Sarah "Sallie" Riggan. His ancestors originated from County Sligo, Ireland. John lived and died in Warren Co., VA, the area previously within Shenandoah Co. John married Sallie about 1740, and they moved to Walnut Branch in April, 1741. On September 23, 1749, John held a land patent from Thomas, Lord Fairfax, proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia, for 308 acres in Augusta Co., VA. The patented land was situated at the forks of Flint Run, a branch of the Shenandoah River, then Dunmore Co., then Shenandoah Co., now Warren Co., VA (near Front Royal). The deed and John's will (dated 15 April 1785, proven 30 March, 1786, Shenandoah Co.), are at the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1772, John and Sarah leased to their son Henry 118 acres of their land in Beckford Parish, Dunmore (now Warren) Co., for "one pepper corn at the feast of St. Michael the Archangel." Six months later, the rent was 36 pounds.

"Dear Cousin: In answer to your esteemed favor of the 11th prox. I will say that myself and many others of our connection here have been engaged for a number of years, trying to get together sufficiently correct data to compile a genealogical history of our branch of the Calfee Family. I was very much puzzled for many years to learn the nativity of our known ancestors. Twenty nine years ago today, I was engaged in the practice of medicine for a firm of large rail-road contractors, Mesars. Mills & Fairfax, at Barren Springs, Va., on that day I met a Dr. Thos. Cassiday, one of their foremen, who was in charge of about a dozen men who were working on the grade just where the depot now stands; he informed me that he was a native of the County Sligo, Ireland, and that when he landed in the State of New York in 1866, that he met a man (C.H. Calfee) who had the same name that numbers of relatives of his had in Ireland, and being the first of that name he had met in this Country since he had left Ireland and that this man had the same name as that of his Grandmother's maiden name; Before he could say another word, I had checked him with the question of how he spelled the name? and he spelled the word C-a-l-f-e-e, and also before he could make any other statement, I enquired of him if there were any people by the name of Riggan in that part of Ireland from which he came, and he immediately informed me that there were hundreds of people by the names of both Calfee and Riggan in County Sligo and the adjoining Counties in Ireland. In 1864, I, for the first time, was shown a small 'Diary' of perhaps a dozen pages, with a tanned buckskin leather back about 4 by 6 inches, by my Grandfather John Calfee [1797-1873], who at that time informed me that this old Diary had and among the first entrys in this diary was one dated April 1741 stating that they had moved to Walnut Branch, this diary was frequently seen by myself until its mysterious disappearance in about 1876."
