Mary Smith of Bessemer, Alabama was a retired officer of the Birmingham Police Department after 20 years of service and was currently an officer with the Fairfield Police Department. She had been with the Fairfield police only two months. In January 2004, the Exchange Club honored her and two other Birmingham officers as officers of the month for talking a suicidal woman into admitting herself to the hospital. She was a member of Bethel 5th Avenue Baptist Church, Bessemer. Survivors: daughter, Ra Sheka; mother, Mrs. Majoriee Freeman; sisters, Annie McAllister and Cheryl Freeman; brother, Ernest Theodore Freeman; God parents, Representative and Mrs. John Rogers; special friend, Tammy Rogers. Mary was shot while answering a call about a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood at age 48.Mary Smith was a City Police Officer in Fairfield, Alabama. She served 21 years for the Police Force, only 2 months of it in Fairfield, the rest of the time for Birmingham, Alabama. Dying in the line of duty at age 48. Officer Smith was checking on a suspicious vehicle on Avenue H. Without warning, as she stepped out of her patrol car, a suspect opened fire on her, fatally wounding her in the chest. A second Officer who arrived on the scene, moments later, was shot in the leg. Two suspects were taken into custody immediately after the shooting. The shooter and third suspect, was apprehended the following day.
