Edward, an attorney by trade, was one of at least five children of David Taylor and Margaret Livingston of Columbus.

He enlisted as a Captain in Company "D", 95th Ohio Infantry, and was commissioned on 18 August 1862. He resigned on 3 July 1863. During his term of service, the regiment participated in the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky (29-30 August 1862), in which most of the regiment was captured and held three months before being paroled; and the operations against Vicksburg, including the failed assault of 22 May 1863.

After the Civil War, Edward became Companion #14663 in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), the first post-Civil War veterans' organization. His membership medal is shown here.

He and wife Kate had at least five children: Edward Jr., Henry, Louise, John and Katherine.
