Matthew Halferty was born in Westmoreland County, Pa., April 26th, in the year 1810. He was one among the first settlers in Liberty Township, Lucas County, Iowa, having moved here in the year 1849.

He was taken with la grippe about the 20th of January of this year and was confined to his bed for a few days. He recovered again so as to be up and walk around a little and seemed to be getting better, until about 4 o'clock on Sunday, the 5th of this month, when he was taken bad all of a sudden and died in a few minutes. It is supposed that he had a paralytic stroke.

He was 81 years old. He was a member of the Christian church. His remains were interred in the Chariton Cemetery.

Although not yet confirmed, it is likely that Mathew is the son of Elizabeth Nesbit and John Halferty who were present in Richland County, OH, by 1830. There, Mathew married Margaret Phipps about 1835 and they had six known children. The Mathew Halferty family migrated to Ray County, MO in the mid 1840s and then to Lucas County, IA after 1850.
