Dick joined the U.S. Air Force in the early 1950s. While stationed in Denver, Colorado, he met a young WAF, Jane Patterson. They married on 29 May 1956 and had four children.
As with most military families, there were varying duty assignments and household moves. The last duty station was Castle AFB at Atwater. After his military retirement, Dick worked as meat inspector for the USDA, from which he also retired.
