|Birth: ||Mar. 11, 1924|
|Death: ||Nov. 19, 2003|
Son of Vernie Allen (V.A.) Jones and Helen Byers Jones; two older brothers and one younger sister. Beloved husband of 59 years to his high school sweetheart, Irene. He was a wonderful father of two daughters and two sons, grandfather of six, and great-grandfather of two.
Wayne was a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army during World War II and was recalled to active service once again in the Korean War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in Korea, 11 October 1951, while in Company L, 3d Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment (Infantry), 1st Cavalry Division. He "distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces in the vicinity of Mago-ri, Korea". He also earned the Bronze Star as Infantry Unit Commander in 1951.
Wayne was a graduate of the University of Illinois with two engineering degrees. He was a manager for Illinois Power Company for over 35 years, first in Decatur and later in Monticello, IL, where he retired. He and Irene then built a home in New Mexico and had another home in Florida before settling on Florida as their true retirement home. They lived there until he died in 2003.
He was very active in his churches in Illinois and Florida as treasurer, deacon and elder. Wayne loved to travel with his wife and family and meticulously planned many family vacations when the kids were young, providing them with an invaluable education in the history of the country. They tent-camped when it wasn't popular yet, and then later he and Irene graduated to a camper. He and Irene even bought a couple of small motorcycles and took them on their trips to the southwest so they could explore the area better.
Wayne could fix or build anything and always helped out with that when visiting his children on their many trips. He was a man of honor and high standards, and taught his children to be responsible and always strive for the best, no matter how much work that might take.
Wayne was well-respected by many; a fine man with a gentle and kind soul. Not a day goes by without his family remembering him and what a remarkable man, husband, father and grandpa he was.
Rest in peace, Dad.
