Pepper was a long haired calico cat. When my son's dad brought her home she was about half grown.
My son was around three years old when we got her and she was the first pet he'd ever had. I think he was the first 'boy' she'd ever had also. Like Forest Gump would say, "They were like peas and carrots", where ever you'd find one the other wasn't far away.
She slept with him and if at all possible was touching him whenever he was still.
Once while one of my brothers was staying with us, my son got a splinter in the bottom of his foot and my brother and I had my son on the bed trying to get the splinter out. I'm sure it hurt some but to hear my son take on you'd think we were amputating his leg with no painkiller. He'd no sooner let out the first squeal when here came Pepper and up on the bed she flew. She lay down across my son's lap and if looks could kill, my brother and I would've been dead ducks. I'd never seen a cat 'glare' at someone but she certainly didn't like what we were doing to 'her human'. And the funny thing was, when she'd look at Tonka, my son, the look on her 'face' would change, sounds crazy but it's true. When he'd squirm around as we tried to get the splinter out she'd rub her head under his chin and on his face and it seemed to comfort him... odd they were.
Then came the time she got pregnant... Tonka couldn't wait for 'his Pepper' to have her babies. Naturally we figured we'd come home from work and find her there in her bed with the newborn kitties and that would be that, but nooooo!! One evening my son ran to me and was having a fit, saying that something was wrong with his Pepper, that she was behind the sofa and making awful noises. Being raised in the country I knew what was probably going on and tried with all my might to get him to just wait 'til everything was quiet and we'd see Pepper and her babies when she was finished. Nothing would do him but to see that she wasn't mashed behind the sofa. I reminded him that she couldn't be mashed back there because there was enough room for him and her to crawl and play behind there but that didn't quiet him at all.
Thinking that once he saw she wasn't 'mashed', he'd calm down, I pulled the sofa out from the wall about a foot so he could see Pepper. As quick as a flash he was down there on the floor by her, had her pulled up on his lap and hugged up to her head. I just about had a heart attack. As kids we'd always been told to leave mother cats alone when they were giving birth, that they might possibly bite or scratch you during the birthing process. I yanked the sofa on out into the room so I could get to them and as I got down beside them I realized Pepper had stopped making any kind of noise, the only noise was Tonka talking to her, telling her it was gonna be all right and that he loved her and all the time stroking her head and back. I was afraid that maybe him disturbing her had stopped her labor. I sat there on the floor beside them and soon realized that she was still having contractions. Only a few minutes passed and she started having her kittens. She never made another sound, just lay there on his lap and gave birth to four kittens and the whole time Tonka held and comforted her.
My son was thrilled and amazed to witness the whole thing and immediately picked out the new baby that he wanted to keep from the litter. He named that baby Buckwheat, he also loved watching the old Little Rascals series on TV, hence the name.
Pepper was one of those animals that bond with one person and that's pretty much it. She liked the rest of us, or shall I say she 'tolerated' us, after all we did provide food, shelter and entertainment for her and 'her human'.

No pet was ever loved more than that cat was loved by my son, Tonka Joe. And no cat ever worshiped a human like she did him.

In the top pic of Tonka and Pepper, you may notice that Tonka has on really big boots... they belonged to his uncle Frank. He was staying with us at the time and Tonka had the boots on whenever Frank DIDN'T.He's even wearing them on the wrong feet!
He'd figured out that if he wore them on the wrong feet... they 'fit' better!

" THE RAINBOW BRIDGE "

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, sunshine and toys, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

Those who were abused or mal-treated have had their tears wiped away, and sit for as long as they want on the Golden Flowing Robes of God's Lap. They feel the touch of Pure Love on their heads and finally know happiness. All the animals are happy and content, except for one small thing -they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent and her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.
