Donald L. Brown, 80, of Eau Claire, Wis., went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 19, 2010, at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire.

He was born in Eau Claire on February 14, 1930, a son of Lester and Lillian (Gunderson) Brown. He graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School. Don entered the U.S. Navy on February 1, 1949. During the Korean War, Don served aboard the USS Whetstone and was honorably discharged on June 21, 1952.

Don married Doris E. Schotzko in Winona, Minn., on September 10, 1962. He worked in various jobs including as a manager at a Woolworth department store in Chicago before returning to Eau Claire to work for U-Haul. Don then worked as an automobile mechanic at Markquart and other auto dealerships until his medical retirement.

He was a very active life member of VFW Post 305 where he served as Post Commander, Poppy Chairman, Flag Chairman, and served on the Honor Guard for many years.

Don was one of the first volunteers to teach Hunter Safety classes with his good friends Maynard and Archie.

He loved hunting and fishing with family and friends. Over the years Don and Doris enjoyed many trips including those to California to visit family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife, Doris, of 47 years; daughter, Jacquelyn Smith of Anaheim, Calif.; two grandsons, Christopher and Richard Smith both of Anaheim; one great-grandson, Matthew Smith; brother-in-law, Robert Schotzko of West Bend, Wis.; sister-in-law, Marie I. Schotzko of West Bend; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Arthur Brown.

Don will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2010, at Eau Claire Wesleyan Church, 2405 Keith St., with Pastor Dwayne Winterberg officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire, where VFW Post 305 will present military graveside honors.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
