Daughter of James B. Muff, Sr., and Fetna Louise Koory, Nancy was born at the Pratap Vilas Palace in Jamnagar, India, where her father was a business partner of the Maharajah of Nawanagar.

Wife of Thomas Paul Ryba, whom she married on July 19, 1969, in San Fernando, Los Angeles, CA, and from whom she was divorced on July 13, 1992. Nancy and Tom had one child.

Excerpt from the announcement of Nancy's death which was sent to her colleagues at UCLA:
Nancy was "responsible for building the Translational Oncology Research International (TORI) Network with Dr. Dennis Slamon and Dr. John Glaspy. TORI has allowed for cancer patients all around the country and world to have access to important and early cancer therapies that are life-extending and life-saving. Nancy also directed the UCLA Clinical Research Unit for many years. Through her tireless work, Nancy was able to touch and help thousands of cancer patients. Her unwavering efforts towards cancer research continue today through TORI and the UCLA Clinical Research Unit. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.

OBITUARY - NANCY MUFF RYBA
Nancy Muff Ryba died July 27, 2012 at her home in Woodland Hills, CA after a valiant battle with metastatic carcinoid cancer.
.
She was born on November 4, 1948 in Jamnagar, India, to James B. Muff, Sr., and Fetna "Fette" Koory. She spent her early years in India and came to the United States with her mother in 1953.
.
In 1969, she graduated from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Los Angeles, and in July of that year she married Thomas P. Ryba in San Fernando, CA.
.
During her career, she worked in a variety of nursing positions, primarily in renal dialysis and intensive care, before moving into the field of cancer research. From 1997 to 2011 she was the Director of UCLA's Cancer Research Unit and Cancer Research Network.
.
Nancy was a gifted quilter and an avid genealogist, whose research into her family history linked her with far-flung "cousins" in England, Ireland, and Lebanon. She did such a good job of researching her Lebanese roots that when she died, Koory bishops in Australia and in France celebrated High Masses for her on the day of her funeral here in Los Angeles. (The Koory's were an ancient Roman Catholic family in Lebanon, many of whose members were priests, bishops, and even more highly ranked religious.)

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda M. Ryba of Woodland Hills, CA; her sister, Janet Muff (and husband James Boyce) of South Pasadena, CA; her brother, James B. Muff, Jr. (and wife Karen) of Sylmar, CA; her niece Allison Muff of Sylmar, CA and nephew Christopher Muff of Pensacola FL; her ex-husband Thomas P. Ryba of Playa del Rey, CA; and many friends and colleagues.

She was predeceased by her parents, her step-father James E. Britt, and her nephew Gregory J. Muff.
.
Her Rosary will be held at 7 PM on Thursday, August 2 at the Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, CA 91345. A funeral Mass will be held at 9 AM on Friday, August 3 at the Mission San Fernando church, 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd., Mission Hills, CA 91345, followed by burial in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, CA 91345.

In lieu of flowers, Nancy wished that donations in her memory be made to the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation/UCLA, Factor Building 8-950, Box 951780, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1780 and designated for research "under the direction of Drs. John Glaspy and Dennis Slamon."
