Nicholas was born in the village of Nohen in the Duchy of Oldenburg (now part of Germany). He married Barbara Milhizer, and the couple immigrated to the United States and settled in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The couple had four children: Jacob (my great grandfather), Mary, George Peter, and Katherine. On October 1, 1862, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States at the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre.

He worked as a coal miner. One day while working at the mine, he was kicked in the head by a mule and suffered a fractured skull. In those days they had no treatment for such a serious head injury, so they sent him to Danville State Mental Hospital where he stayed until he died a few years later.
