Bird was the oldest of twelve children. She worked as a seamstress after high school graduation, and in 1909 graduated from Danville Hospital with a degree in nursing.
She met Francis Joel Bower when they both worked at Danville Hospital, and they married in 1910. The couple had no children of their own, but they raised two of their nieces: Muriel Miers and June Kline.
