Hannah was the second of nine children. She married Daniel Oakes at Moosehead, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on September 28, 1893, and the marriage was performed by Rev. Herman H. Bruening. The couple raised nine children: Mary, Frances, Pearl, Hannah, Cora, Eleanor, Julia, Clara, and Daniel.

She would go for walks in the woods and pick edible wild vegetables - her favorite was wild asparagus. She had diabetes, and had to have both of her legs amputated late in her life.
