Mrs. Anna Baumann, wife of Christian August Baumann Sr. died Wednesday Feb. 23, 1899 at 2:15 P.M. of old age. She had long been an invalid; ten or twelve years ago her eyesight became impaired, and at times she was almost blind. Death claimed her at the age of 76 years, 9 months, and 25 days. The funeral services were conducted at the German Evangelical Church by Rev. P.G. Gerber Friday afternoon. The remains were interred in the city cemetery. Feutz & Koch directed the funeral
The pall bearers were Burkhart Hoffman, Henry Warnecke, Fred Fricker, Jacob Wehrli, Joseph Barth and Christ Niggli.
Deceased was born at Gelterfingen, Canton Berne, Switzerland April 25, 1822. Her maiden name was Habbegger, in 1845 she was united in marriage with John Engemann. Two children were born, a boy and a girl, the latter dying in infancy. Four years after the marriage the husband died, and in 1850 the widow was wedded to Christian Gurtner, and in the same year they arrived in the United States, locating at Highland. Mr. Gurtner died shortly after their arrival, and in 1854 she gave her hand and heart to Christian Baumann, who still survives. John Engemann and Mary Gurtner, children by former husbands, died at the ages of 21 and 18 years respectively. The last union was made happy by the arrival of five children, one daughter and four sons, but one of the latter died. Those surviving are Mrs. Samuel Hug, of Clinton County, Robert and Christ Baumann, of this township, and Fritz Baumann of near Hagarstown, Fayette County. Besides these there remain a brother, Phillip, 24 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and many distant relatives.
