Alex was my grandmother's third husband and she was married to him at the time that I was born. He and his father owned and operated the Alex LaBell and Son Funeral Home in Detroit for many years. At the time of his death, he and my grandmother operated the Blue Haven Restaurant in Troy, IL.

Alex was an avid University of Michigan football fan and had traveled from his home in Illinois to Ann Arbor to see them play their arch-rival, Michigan State. That night, Alex was in Detroit to see his family, and during the night he had a heart attack and died in his hotel room.
