During the Revolutionary War, Roswell enlisted in a Berkshire regiment, commanded by Colonel John Brown, about 1777. On October 19, 1780 he was wounded in an action in which Colonel Brown was killed at Stoneraby on the Mohawk River. The bone in his arm was shattered by a musket ball and required several surgeries to remove bone fragments and then reset the bone.
Roswell married Phoebe Parker on October 5, 1784, they purchased a farm in Wells, Vermont and they had 14 children:
