In 1778-1780, John served as a private in Captain Buchanan's company of the Augusta County Virginia Militia. Supposedly, he and some of his relatives participated in the battle of Guilford Court House. John was also compensated 27 Pounds by James Culbertson in July 1779 for providing 11 sheep, as supplies for the "Convention Troops" quartered near Staunton, Virginia.
Family records indicate John was buried on his farm on Dry Run, Springfield Township, Ross County, Ohio, but his burial site has not been found. A government military stone was ordered for John, and placed in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Sprinfield Township, Ross County, Ohio
