Ocie Ferguson, 76, of Portsmouth, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

She was born July 15, 1928, in Salyersville, Ky., to the late Sam and Elen Hale.

Ocie attended Portsmouth local schools, and received her G.E.D. in 1966. She worked as a nurses's assistant at Grant Hospital in Columbus, was a shoe worker at the former Selby Shoe Company and she retired after 38 years working alongside her husband at their business, Fergie's Lunch. After retirement, Ocie worked as a music teacher for the Portsmouth City Schools After School Mall Program at Wilson Elementary School.

Ocie was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, and grandmother. Her husband, Herman E. Ferguson, whom she married October 20, 1951, in Portsmouth, survives her. Also surviving are her four children, Judy (Tom) Smith, Miles (Patti) Ferguson, Sue (Joe) McNeer and Naomi Ferguson, all of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Walker, Miles L. (Ashley) Ferguson, Kyle Smith, Aaron Smith, Tyler McNeer and Emily Smith; two great-grandchildren, Bria McNeer and MaKenna Walker; two brothers, Arvil (Betty) Hale, of Harrison, Ohio, and Arlie (Tamiko) Hale of Indiana; and a sister, Edna (Jack) Ring of Harrison.

Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Chester, Robert Lee and Myles Hale.

Ocie was a member of Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene for 62 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher for more than 60 years, was the Missionary president for 30 years, served on many boards and committees, sang in the church and festival choirs and sang for numerous weddings and funerals. In 1995 Ocie received the Distinguished Service Award at Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene for her many years of dedicated service to God's work in the local church. In 2003, Ocie received the Distinguished Service Award for the District Church of the Nazarene, for more than 20 years of dedicated service as the Missionary Society Zone Chairperson.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Richard Patmore officiating and interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour before services on Friday.

Donations may be made in Ocie's name to the Nazarene Missions International at Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene and Hospice of Southern Ohio.
