Herman "Fergie" Eugene Ferguson, 87, of Portsmouth, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 22, 2007, at Southern Ohio Mecical Center Hospice Center. He was born June 6, 1920, in Vulcan, W.Va., to the late Pearlie and Francis Wright Ferguson.

Herman was a 1940 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and served our country as a techinical sergeant with the 413th Fighter Squadron and the 500th fighter Bomber Squadron in WWII in the Pacific Theater, where he earned the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Victory Medal and the Good conduct Ribbon. He then re-enlisted in 1949 in the Air Force and served in the Korean War. After returning home from the military, Herman worked with his parents in the family business, and later became the owner of Fergie's Lunch until his retirement in 1995. Herman was a devoted Christian, a 65 year member of Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a church board member and church financial secretary. He was a member of James Dickey Post American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ocie Hale Ferguson, December 22, 2004, whom he married in Portsmouth, October 20, 1951.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Herman is survived by one son, Miles (Patti) Ferguson, of Portsmouth; three daughters, Judy (Tom) Smith, Sue (Joe) McNeer, and Naomi Ferguson, all of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Walker, Miles L.(Ashley) Ferguson, Kyle Smith, Aaron Smith, Tyler McNeer and Emily Smith; three great-grandchildren, Bria Tylee McNeer, MaKenna Rose Walker and Mylee Grace Ferguson; and his two sisters, Georgia Conley and Mary Louise Conley, both of Portsmouth. His brother, Raymond Ferguson, also preceded Herman in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Monday, June 25, 2007, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Rodney Kincaid officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. James Dickey Post 23 of the American Legion will conduct military graveside services.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour.

Contributions may be made in Herman's name to Nazarene Missions International at Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene or to SOMC Hospice.
