Elizabeth Madeleine Merckle Baker, formerly of Bremen, Ohio, passed from this life at age 89, on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, to be with her Lord and Savior.

She was a member of the Bremen-Bethel Presbyterian Church, the Elizabeth Sherman Reese Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the American Legion. "Betty" was the third of four children of Delbert and Edna Hubbard Merckle. She was born May 2, 1920, in Fly, Monroe County, Ohio. the Merckle family moved to Bremen while Betty was a toddler and she graduated from Rushcreek Memorial High School in 1938. She then attended and graduated from the Lancaster Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 as a Registered Nurse. Betty served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corps from 1942 to 1945, spending two years of service in England.

In 1943 she met and married her beloved husband, Walter Lee Baker of Indianapolis, IN, while they were both stationed in the Greenbrier Hotel turned hospital at White Sulphur Springs, WV. She was a nurse and he a young soldier and patient. She served two years of her Army life serving overseas in England. In the years following World War II, Betty and Walter settled in Bremen, OH. They raised four children and celebrated fifty-two years of marriage until Walter died in 1995. From 1997 until 2009, Betty lived with her oldest daughter, Elizabeth Ann, on Goss Road in Sugar Grove, OH.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, one son, John Delbert Baker; a grandson, Timothy Lee Baker; a sister, Alma Pedigo; and a brother, Eugene Merckle.

She is survivied by her sister, Irene Dennis of Lancaster, OH, her children, Elizabeth "Liz" Baker of Sugar Grove, OH, James Michael (Mardessa) Baker of Columbus, OH, and Susannah Walter Lee (Ronald) Fisher of Bremen, OH; daughter-in-law, Twyla (John) Baker; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a devoted daughter, mother and grandmother.

Friends of the family may call at the Morgan Funeral Home in Bremen on Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Bremen-Bethel Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tom Walz and Pastor Cindy McKay officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery.
