Edward was born in Mount Holly, NJ, on Sept.30,1824 son of Rev.David and Sarah F. Dailey (Nee Easterly). Edward's father was a Methodist minister assigned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the lad spent his boyhood and acquired his early education there. After becoming a teenager, Edward worked successively as a clerk in Wil.,DE,Chester,PA and Sav.,GA. While in Georgia he made up his mind to study medicine, and enrolled in the Phila. Medical College. He received a diploma from that school in 1848, and returned to Caroline Co. Maryland to practice. He was practicing in the Linchester/Preston area at the time he joined the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in 1850. Dr. Dailey purchased a farm there and gave every indication of prolonged residence, but subsequently moved to Vienna, Dorchester Co., Maryland from where he moved to Smyrna,DE.

In Smyrna, Dr. Dailey's practice flourished. He joined the Delaware State Medical Society in 1854, was a charter member of the Smyrna Public Library Association in 1858, and in a meteoric rise to medical fame and honor, at the age of thirty five was elected President of the Delaware State Medical Society for 1859-1860.

The Doctor was presented with the sword he is holding by his friends of Smyrna,DE on May 7, 1862 (Now in the hands of Daniel M. Dailey, 2012) He remained with the Army until October of 1863.
