Emanuel Trine was born on March 14, 1823 near Westminster (Carroll County) Maryland, the son of Samuel and Mary "Polly" Myerly Trine (originally spelled Trein.) Emanuel's birth was recorded at Krider's Church at Pipe Creek, Maryland, and it was also recorded in York County PA, as it was the custom of the era to note births in the record of the mother church.

Emanuel, known as "Mand" or "Mandley" to his family, grew up learning the skills of farming, carpentry and masonry. He was also known to be an excellent fiddle player. Letters of the era indicate he was considered quite handsome.

On February 22, 1842, Emanuel wed Susannah Minter (sometimes spelled Minder or G'Minder.) Susannah was a neighbor, and the daughter of Martin and Barbara Minter. During the first years of their marriage they lived near McSherrystown, (Adams County) PA, where three children were born to them. Sadly these three children all died within a span of six weeks in 1852. In all Emanuel fathered nine children.

By 1850 Emanuel and Susannah were again living in Carroll County, Maryland, purchasing land near the village of Manchester.

Sometime after 1860, Susannah Trine died. She was last noted in the 1860 Carroll County, Maryland census. There is some conflicting information about her death, but there is no evidence beyond the census records. So far there has been no document found that recorded her death.

With the start of Civil War, Carroll County called for volunteers to join the fight. On August 1, 1862, at the age of 39, Emanuel Trine enlisted in Co. A, 6th Maryland Infantry Volunteers. Emanuel joined along with his much younger brother,David Urias Trine. His military record indicates he was a sharpshooter. The Trine bothers participated in many of the major campaigns of the war. There is no record that Emanuel was wounded in battle, but he suffered from the diseases and harsh conditions inflicted upon all the soldiers of that era, and this seriously weakened his health for the remainder of his life.

Emanuel was mustered out of the service on July 5, 1865. By 1866 he is recorded as living on Walsh Street in Baltimore. He married again to Mary Catherine Minter Kelbaugh Goodwin. Mary was the daughter of John Martin and Mary Minter. She was a niece to Emanuel's first wife. To this new marriage a daughter Laura Virginia was born. Also Emanuel became the step-father to Mary's son, John Goodwin. Sadly Emanuel lost his second wife in 1877, as Mary died on December 21.

Seeking a fresh start, Emanuel followed two of his siblings to Michigan in the late 1870s. There are newspaper accounts of him working as a carpenter in Grayling, and for running for Sheriff or Constable in two other locations. By 1880 he was living in Brookfield, Eaton County, MI, in the home of his son Emanuel Edwin. The elder Emanuel Trine died on May 24, 1884.
