Sheck grew up in rural St. Matthews, SC and lived there his entire life. On July 24, 1923, he married Grace Edith Golson in Orangeburg, SC. From this marriage four children were born: Edith Annette Robinson, Jewell Aliene Robinson, Betty Miranda Robinson and Shellie Johnson "S. J." Robinson, Jr.
He was a farmer and loved plowing the fields with his Farmall tractor. Sheck and Grace owned Walsh Place down the road from their home on Murph Mill Road. It was additional farming acreage for the family and was home to the Robinson Pond that was built by Sheck and various relatives in the 1950s. He was an avid fisherman. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with his family.
His favorite color was yellow. His favorite actress was Yvonne De Carlo. He was a member of St. Matthews Presbyterian Church in St. Matthews.
He was diagnosed with cancer. When the end was near, Grace asked Dr. Symmes what he would do if it were his family member as far as putting him in the hospital or keep him at home. Dr. Symmes told Grace that being as they both knew how much Sheck hated the hospital, he would just make him as comfortable as possible at home as he would probably pass very soon. Grace kept him at home and engaged her children with his upkeep in the days to come. He passed in their bedroom on October 7, 1970.
