Petrine was the 2nd child of seven born to Severin M Nykreim and Marthe Knudsdtr Nykreim (nee Kappadal). Her parents met and married in Minneapolis, MN. Both were immigrants from different areas of Norway.
In 1878 Petrine, abt age 3, her parents and two siblings (her brother only a few months old) moved from Stanton, in Goodhue Co, MN to Goose Prairie in Clay Co, by horse and wagon, where her father the year before had homesteaded and built a "substantial 14x22'cabin." This is where Petrine and her siblings grew up.(her parents in 1897 built a home in Ulen township and moved off the farm)
She said growing up on the Prairie was extreme. Harsh winters, Prairie fires that were unstoppable, attacks from the Indian tribes, no doctors except in the large cities, mostly relied on home remedies and mid-wives for child birthing.
She met Christian Paulson, a graduate of Albert Lee Lutheran Academy. They married on Sept 5, 1896. They had six children, all but the youngest born in Ulen, MN. They were well respected in the community. Christian was elected as Clay County Treasurer in 1908 which he held for a number of years.
In 1924, Christian and Petrine moved to Los Angeles, CA where most of their children had moved. Christian died in 1931, Petrine in the mid 1940's moved to Van Nuys to live with her son Palmer. This is where she lived until her death in 1969.
I still remember a comment she made to me;
"The period of time that I grew up and lived in is probably the greatest advance of technology ever! I went from the horse and buggy to cars; Kerosene lanterns to electricity and all the comforts that have come with it
(Telephone, Radio, television, refrigerators, washer and dryers etc.); From outhouses to indoor plumbing and washrooms, to airplanes, rocket ships and the FIRST man on the MOON!"
