Memorial services for David Allen Shelton, 65, Whitehouse, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at Gateway Baptist Church, Whitehouse, with Pastor Rick Sydnor and Kevin Hearon officiating.

David was born in Tyler on Oct. 17, 1949, the oldest child of Vinson Allen Shelton, Jr. and Fay Wright Shelton. He passed away at Hospice of East Texas on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, after a long, hard battle with biliary cancer. He was a fighter, orginally given six months to live. He passed the two and a half year mark before the end. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church.

He was the first child delivered by Dr. Harold Cameron at Mother Frances Hospital in 1949. He attended grade school in Magnolia, Ark. and graduated from Vidalia High School, Vidalia, La., attending Louisiana Tech University in Shreveport, La. before joining the U.S. Navy and serving in Vietnam during the Vietnam War in Special Forces.

He worked several different jobs during his years in the oilfield, mostly in Louisiana and Texas, including wireline, drilling, production, safety, H2S safety and well site mudlogging. He retired in 2007 while he was working for Delek Refining in Tyler. He was a avid golfer qualifing for the Million Dollar Hole in One in Tyler one year. He also loved camping, fishing and creating fly ties. He loved his two little sidekicks, his two faithful dogs who stayed by his side until the end, Sammy and Nugget. They are missing him terribly.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Hearon Shelton, Whitehouse; daughter, Alana Shelton Johnson, Cedar Park, Tx.; one grandson, Anakin Johnson, and one granddaughter, Aayla Johnson, also of Cedar Park, Tx.; one son, Kerry Everett and wife Amy, Whitehouse; one precious aunt, Patricia Miears, Tyler; and his special cousins, Scott, Mark and Clay Miears.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Shelton of Arizona; and parents of Gun Barrel City.

The family would like to thank the Hospice of East Texas Foundation for their fine care during the last few months, including Dr. Beets, Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Gunter and especially our home care nurse, Joyce Story, R.N. A special thanks to Amy Everett, our daughter-in-law, for her help and thoughtfulness especially during the last several months.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorials may be made to The Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, 75701, or Gateway Baptist Church, Whitehouse.
