On November 20, 1967, Officer Wilfred T. Long, DSN 6789, was commissioned as a police officer and entered the academy for the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. After graduation, P.O. Long's first assignment was in the 8th District on March 11, 1968. He was transferred to the Juvenile Division on November 15, 1971, and remained there for the majority of his career as a juvenile detective. On February 25, 1985, he went back to the 8th District until he retired on November 23, 1987.

When Officer Long retired from the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department on November 23, 1987, he had completed 20.01 years of dedicated service.

Officer Long had also served in Vietnam War in the United States Army, where he held the rank of Specialist 4th Class.
