Connie Backes, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in Minot's Trinity Hospital, the same place she was born 74 years earlier.

Constance LaVonne "Connie" Schimmelpfennig was born on March 5, 1939, the daughter of Lawrence and Clarice (Olson) Schimmelpfennig. She was raised on a farm West of Ruthville and attended a country school near her home until attending Glenburn High School, graduating from there in 1957.

Connie married Roger Backes on August 19, 1957, at St. Philomena's Catholic Church in Glenburn. They lived in Glenburn and raised their family of four children. After the youngest went off to school, so did Connie, working at the Glenburn Public School cafeteria for a time. Then Connie joined Roger in operating Roger's Market in Glenburn until 1991 when they said goodbye to the grocery store and moved to Minot. Connie then worked for Wal-Mart for 10 years. In her retirement, she volunteered her time helping care for others and enjoying coffee with her friends.

Her family was her life. She lived for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Connie was a member of St. Philomena's Catholic Church in Glenburn and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Minot.

Connie is survived by her husband, Roger, Minot; children, Brian (Joan) Backes, Bismarck, Carla (Rick) Schilken, Minot, Blair Backes, Minot, and Bryce Backes, Minot; grandchildren, Chris (Erika) Schilken, Cameron Schilken, Danielle Schilken, Brittany (Dustin) Offerdahl, Brooks Backes and Brenden Backes; great-grandchildren, Izabella, Mack, Knox and Case Schilken; brother, Larry (Ilene) Schimmelpfennig, Minot; sister, Clara Jeanne (Lee) Vigstol, Minot; brothers-in-law, Roger Dozark, Jim Kosse, Orlin (Millie) Backes; sister-in-law, Estelle Vatter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Darlene Dozark and Cyndi Kosse.

Burial will be at St. Philomena's Catholic Cemetery, Glenburn, ND, on Monday, October 7, 2013.
