Mother of singer Jimmy Buffett and mother-in-law of novelist Thomas McGuane. She and husband James Delaney 'J.D.' Buffett both worked for Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co. (ADDSCO) in Mobile, JD as an estimator, and Peets working her way up from secretary to assistant director of industrial relations. Peets retired from ADDSCO in 1979, exchanging her office books for school books. According to her family, she graduated from the University of South Alabama -- cum laude -- at age 64. Jimmy Buffett attributes much of his own, early awareness of the arts to Peets. In April, 2002, he told the Mobile Register: "My mother certainly was the influence on the artistic things. My dad was a shipyard guy. My mother wanted us to see beyond the boundaries of Spring Hill. We came on one side from a seafaring family. My grandfather, in his travels, certainly was an influence on all of us, it was one window to the world. My mother offered another window to the world in that she encouraged us to read and to explore the arts." Ed Bradley of CBS' "60 Minutes" gave the eulogy at her funeral.

Born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, in 1921, Mary Loraine Peets Buffett was known simply as "Peets" to her family and friends. The mother of two daughters, Laurie and Lucy, and a son who is one of The University of Southern Mississippi's most prominent alumni, Jimmy Buffett, she is remembered for her infectious love of books, people and family. Peets, who passed away in 2003 in Point Clear, Alabama, delighted in gorgeous sunsets, the scent of magnolias, visits from loved ones and writing poetry. She also knew the value of hard work and education.

A 1940 graduate of Gulf Park College for Women (now the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus) in Long Beach, Mississippi, her desire for learning never ceased. Following her retirement from employment in 1979, Peets fulfilled her lifelong dream of obtaining a university degree at the age of 64. Her values of love, education, and hard work were passed to her three children, and they live on today through the Mary Loraine Peets Buffett Endowed Scholarship at The University of Southern Mississippi
