TEXAS CITY — A 46-year-old man wade fishing near the Texas City Dike drowned Saturday afternoon when he was swept away by a current, an official said.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, waded into the water off the dike and was fishing with a nephew when he went underwater at about 4 p.m., Texas City fire Capt. Mark Pandanell said.
The man was not wearing a lifejacket, Pandanell said.
Texas City firefighters and police searched for the man, whose body was found by a kayaker fishing in the area a little more than 30 minutes after he was reported missing.
A U.S. Coast Guard crew was initially alerted to help search for the man, but was called off after the body was recovered, Pandanell said.
The man's nephew was uninjured, Pandanell said.
Pandanell said it was critical for anglers near the Texas City Dike to take precautions and wear lifejackets.
"The water level might change quickly with the currents," he said.
Pandanell said the man was from the Clear Lake area.
