Born in Kentucky according to 1860 Census of Knox County MO. The family living in Missouri somewhat over five years at that time.
Both broken family stone has been reset and also Federal Tombstone in the Family Cemetery north of Newark in center of section 10.
R.P. Elston Co. G 39th MO Inf.
Killed in the Battle of Centralia September 27, 1864. The graves of Companies A, G, and H were at first in Centralia and moved to Jefferson City in 1873. There is a Shelby County History record of three soldiers remains brought back to Shelby County in September 1864-David N. Dunn-(original and also Federal duplicate) William Lair, and
Louis F. Marquette (Grave in Shelby Memorial Cemetery [AKA Shelbyville IOOF Cemetery]). Robert P. Elston was brought back to Knox County for burial,(see Elston Infant story). Some conflict exists in numbers and burial locations. The monument in Jefferson City National Cemetery is to those who were killed, not necessarily that all are buried there. At least one source says that Major Andrew Van Emin Johnston (not "Johnson") was taken back to Marion County. Said to have been buried first near Huntington in the Ralls County Johnston family home area, then reinterred in Monroe City when his father was buried. A family gravestone exists in St. Jude Cemetery in Monroe County just west of Marion County.
Major A.V. Johnston
