Lon Jackson Bugg was the husband of Mary Ida Elizabeth Hayes. He was the father of ten children: Reba, Thomas William Jr., Juliett, Madge, Leota, Lon Hayes, Lila Annis, Ruth, John Paul, and Inez. He and his family lived in the community of Maness but relocated to the Barling area after their home place (inherited from wife's parents) was taken to establish Fort Chaffee. The Janet Huckabee Nature Center now sits on land that was formerly theirs.

In Lon Jackson's early years, he farmed growing cotton and a variety of garden vegetables and owned and operated a cotton gin in downtown Barling with his brother Jim. He was a generous man and took great pleasure in sharing his produce with neighbors and extended family. Later on, he was a surveyor and a member of a surveying party that mapped the plains in far western Indian Territory. He eventually became a road and highway construction foreman, helping establish what is now known as U.S. Highway 71. He was well-educated, an avid reader, and a biblical scholar.

Lon Jackson was the son of William Thomas Bugg and Martha "Mattie" Temperance McAllister/McAlester Bugg. He had five siblings. His entire family, with the exception of his daughters, Leota and Inez, are buried at the old family cemetery which was established by his mother and father - Steep Hill Cemetery, in Sebastian County, Arkansas.
