Thomas H. Caperton was the son of Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith and Calloway W. Caperton, and the grandson of Sarah "Sally" Wells and James Caperton of Williamson/Maury county, Tennessee, born about 1835. His maternal grandparents were Thomas and Nancy Smith, also of Williamson County, Tennessee

After his father's death in 1850, Williamson County court records indicate that Thomas H. Smith (maternal grandfather) was appointed guardian of Thomas H. Caperton and his minor siblings, Elizabeth, Elvira, Mary, Nancy, Susan, and John. Only one brother, Williamson, had reached the age of majority according to a March 1953 settlement of money owed to them by their guardian.

On July 22, 1853, Thomas married Mary E. Hartgraves in neighboring Maury County. By the 1860 census, Thomas, his wife and children had moved to Waylands Springs, District 1, Lauderdale County, Tennessee (1860 Census). Thomas was listed as having been born in Tennessee. Mary's birthplace was shown as Alabama. The couple most likely migrated to join his oldest brother, Williamson Caperton, who was enumerated in the same census with the residence of Lauderdale County.
