Johnny Mar Wells, my father, at the age of 60, passed away today, at 4:05 pm at my sister's house where he had been living for the last few months.
Dad went out to smoke, then apparently had a heart attack or stroke. He was found face down in his recliner still with his jacket on. Dad had been diagnosed with multiple myloma 6 months prior which is a rare blood cancer. He had been in the hospital recently and then was sent to the rehab wing of the nursing home. Aunt Hazel had taken him out for a steak dinner a couple days prior and said he looked wonderful and was in a good mindset.
Services were held at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton. My (then) husband, Jody Murray, officiated the services.
A native of Christian County, he was the son of the late Burno Lewis Wells and Ethelene Pearl Boren Wells Blackwell. He was a veteran of the Navy and a registered nurse at JSMC ER for many years. Dad also drove a truck for Miles Trucking. For the last several years he was disabled.
Proceeding Dad in death was my favorite uncle, Ricky Lewis Wells, and his step father Leo Blackwell.
Survivors include myself and my sister, Wendy Wells McDowell, 5 grandchildren, one brother, Kenneth Wells, Ill.; three sisters; Nancy Brown, Knoxville, Tn., Brenda Voisinet, Bloomington, Ill., and Hazel Smith, Hopkinsville, Ky.
Dad was one of the leaders in Sports Medicine on the sidelines of Colonel Football. He along with Dr. William Sweet and Mike Pyle were on the sidelines at every game taking care of the football team. This was before it was required. They did Coach Goble and the entire football team a great service.
Just an interesting fact: My grandfather, Burno Wells, died at the age of 60 and a month, so did my father.
I asked my Aunts and my Uncle why Dad was given the name Mar, this is what they told me...
My grandmother let Dad's nurse give him his middle name of Mar. He was named after her boyfriend who was killed in the war. The meaning of the name Mar fits Dad perfectly.
