Alice was born to Lawrence Holmes Britt and Maris Lawson on March 5, 1930, in Lumberton, North Carolina, the youngest of ten children who lived through infancy. When she was only five years old, her father died at the age of 56. At the age of ten, she lost her half-sister, Annie Eula Britt, and her uncle, Carlton Reeves Lawson, in a car accident. Growing up, she first married Henry Theodore Casanta, with whom she had two children. After divorcing, she married James Cecil Stone, also of Lumberton, in Fort Smith, Arkansas on December 14, 1954. They had two children together, one of which, Carl, preceded her in death after he was critically injured during an accident near an oil rig. He was only 21.
In 1957, Alice opened Aestethic Hairstyling on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, NC. For over 50 years, she operated this salon, in addition to a location she opened in University Mall in 1973, as well as owning Merle Norman Cosmetics. Besides her business duties, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, fishing, and cooking, literally having hundreds of cookbooks. You could normally catch her watching Fox News, especially when Shepard Smith and Bill O'Reilly were on. If you wanted a movie to watch, she would be glad to let you watch "Pretty Woman," her favorite movie.
During the later years of her life, she suffered from Parkinson's disease, a broken hip, and other complications, but remained positive, as she always said that it is "easier to die when so many of your loved ones are already in Heaven waiting for you."

Around 1 pm on the afternoon of July 5, 2012, I received a phone call from my mother, informing me that my grandmother could pass away shortly. Although her death was expected, you can never prepare yourself for that call. I immediately stopped what I was doing and made the 3.5 hour trip to Chapel Hill. While she had been unresponsive the past few days, my mother still told her I was on my way, knowing that hearing is the last sense to go. The entire drive I kept thinking about "The Baby" by Blake Shelton and I knew I had to get there for her. Being her youngest grandchild, she always spoiled me during the many summers and weeks I stayed with her. Within ten minutes or so of my arrival being announced, at 4:40pm, she passed away at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her family. She had waited for me and now she was finally able to join her parents, siblings, son, and friends who had been waiting for her.
