This bio comes from "HISTORY OF WABASHA COUNTY" 1884.

Boutelle, Dr. David K., of Lake City, is a retired dentist formerly of Vermont. He was born in Landgrove, that State, in 1811, and is the eighth generation from James Boutelle who settled with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America in 1632. At the age of twenty-one the Doctor entered a teachers' seminary and after a preparatory course of two years he devoted six years to teaching. He then entered on the study of dentistry under the private tutorship of D. Esteen, of Providence, Rhode Island, and entered on the practice of his profession a few years later at Newport in the same State, where remained nine years. He them removed to Manchester, New Hampshire, and there continued in practice till 1866 when he removed to Worcester, Massachusetts, whence he came to Lake City in 1869. Here he engaged in the practice of his profession from which he retired in 1879.

The doctor was reared and educated strictly in the orthodox faith but has materially changed his views in later years. He is a free thinker and an enthusiastic advocate of his belief and a formidable antagonist of the principles indorsed by him in early life.

Dr. Boutelle served a preceptorship in dentistry by practicing in a dentist's office. In this case D. Esteen in Providence, Rhode Island. As of now I have not been able to learn anything of this dentist.

"Doctor" Boutelle since he was not formally educated in dentistry did not hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree but many practitioners of dentistry were "grandfathered" and allowed to continue practicing during the early years of dentistry's establishment as a profession.

The DDS degree is the one awarded by the majority of dental schools in the United States. The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was established in 1840 and was THE FIRST DENTAL SCHOOL IN THE WORLD and thus the first to grant the DDS degree. The DMD degree was first used in 1867 when Harvard established the first university affiliated dental school. The reason this degree is DMD rather than DDM is that it stands for the Latin "Dentariae Medicinae Doctor."

Elisabeth Bancroft and David Knight Boutelle were married in 1839 according to the family tree. The French spelling of Elisabeth is as it was recorded in the 1850 census. They had four children, three of which are linked below. The other is Frank M Boutelle (1843–?). Elisabeth died 24 July 1864.

Elvira Shedd, the daughter of Luther & Abigail Shedd, was married to Dr. David Knight Boutelle on 9 December 1864 in Manchester, New Hampshire some five months after the death of his first wife. He was 53 and she 40 years old.

I have not been able to trace any children from this second marriage.
