Zelma was born on 2 April 1881, the third child to Danford Odell Adams and Eliza Jane 'Janey' (Hawkins) Adams. Her siblings were Loretta (died young), Fred Odell Adams, Minnie Mae Adams-Marsh, Tony Ross Adams and Archie Adams-Hankins.

She married Jefferson Clarence Smith 28 June 1902 and by 1917 she and her family were living in (Sawtelle - now Santa Monica/Culver City) Los Angeles, CA. where Jefferson could receive the medical treatment necessary for his disabilities received during his service in the Philippine Insurrection.

Jefferson died on 24 March 1927 and was buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA, Section 51, Row F, Site 3.

Zelma married second Hubert M. Addington about 1930 in Los Angeles. Hubert died 28 May 1932 and was also buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery, Section 67, Row E, Site 6.

By the mid 1940's Zelma moved to Medford, Oregon to be near her now married daughter where she died on 7 Nov 1960 at the age of 79 years. Her family brought her back to Los Angeles, Ca to be buried with her second husband at Los Angeles National Cemetery, Section 67, Row E, Site 6.
