Jefferson Clarence Smith was born 4 Sept 1874 in Rising Sun, IN. He attended Stillwater College in Stillwater, OK (changed to Oklahoma A & M and ultimately Oklahoma State University).

He married 1st Eva Edwards about 1895 and had a son Carl Smith b. 1896. Jefferson was an adventurous individual and under protest of his young wife, went off to fight in the Spanish American War, leaving Eva and young son Carl in the care of his father John Smith in Stillwater. They were later divorced and Eva remarried J B Ellis who raised Carl (Smith) Ellis as his own.

On 8 April 1899, at age 24, Jefferson registered as a Private with the US Army, 16th Infantry, Co. G. in Fort Riley, Kansas. He served in the Philippine Insurrection, and received a disability discharge out of San Francisco, CA on 2 April 1901 as a result of an injury to his left eye and leg. He returned to his family in Oklahoma (then Indian Territory).

He married 2nd Zelma Emma Adams on 28 Jun 1902 in Stillwater, Payne Co, OK where his daughter, Nona Aline, was born 14 Aug 1904.

The family moved to Los Angeles, CA when on 16 September 1917 he was admitted to the Old Soldier's Home in Sawtelle, (now Santa Monica/West Los Angeles) CA. Jefferson committed suicide on 24 March, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA after suffering for years from his disability leaving a widow, Zelma Emma (Adams) Smith and then married daughter, Nona Aline Smith-Davenport, and two grandchildren. He is buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Section 51, Row F, Site 3.
