Deputy Ken Collier was killed in a single vehicle accident during a pursuit.

Deputy Collier was heading west on Route 52 from Santee when he spotted a wrong-way driver coming at him, and reported the incident to his dispatcher. He turned around and was trying to overtake the driver when the squad car struck an abutment and rolled down a hill. A dispatcher riding with the deputy was injured in the accident. Deputy Collier was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was caught nearby and will be charged with vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.

Deputy Collier had served with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for nine years. He had previously served with San Diego County Marshal's Office for three years. He is survived by his fiance

Kenneth James Collier was born June 4, 1970 in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1977, Ken and his family moved to San Diego. He grew up in the Santee area and graduated from Santana High School in 1988. He attended Grossmont College and SDSU where he was majoring in Administration of Justice.

As a youth, he held jobs with Rebel Rents, SeaWorld, AMC Theater and Blockbuster. It was while he was working at Rebel Rents that Ken first became intrigued with a law enforcement career. He would see the deputies coming and going from the Santee Station and had conversations with them about a law enforcement career. As a result he decided to go into law enforcement.

Ken began his law enforcement career with the San Diego County Marshal's Office in 1997. He worked as a Field Service Officer and then became a Court Service Officer. In 2000, the Sheriff's Department and Marshal Office merged and he remained a Court Service Officer with the Sheriff's Department. In August 2001, he was hired as a Detention/Court Deputy Sheriff and continued his duties in the detention facilities, the Detentions Training Unit and the Court Services Bureau. In July 2006, Ken was hired as a Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff and joined the Santee Station in September 2006.

Ken was described by his supervisors as: steadfast, dependable, and a people person. Marshal Klippert honored Ken with a commendation for his dedication and dependability. Ken also received an Exemplary Performance Certificate in July 2004 for his contribution to the Performance Impact Team (PIT) which examined the Standards and Training in the Court Service Bureau.

On his days off, Ken loved flying model airplanes and riding quads. At one time his life ambition was to be a surf bum and live under the OB pier, which is a long way from being a deputy sheriff.

His future mother in law dubbed Ken as Mr. Fix it. She had a special place in their house for "Kenny's tools and his fix it list." Ken was known to host some great Halloween parties in his time. The theme for his last party was "Come as your favorite Penal Code."

Deputy Collier is survived by his fiancée Karen Li, a sister Nancy Robinson and a brother Lauren Collier. Ken and Karen were planning to be married on June 4, 2010, on Ken's 40th Birthday, in Kauai, Hawaii. Ken and Karen had several animals including Zelda the cat, Guinness and Sierra the dogs (do you sense a beer theme) and Moochie a stray cat that only comes around to be fed.

Ken was a fun loving individual who was well liked and respected by his co-workers and he enjoyed working for the Sheriff's Department. Ken was a true professional and friend. He will be missed.

A memorial fund has been set up for the Collier Family. You may donate to the fund at any San Diego County Credit Union to the Kenneth J. Collier Memorial Fund.
