Henry Kiel, a man who married my grand aunt Edna Luetta Svinth. He passed away on May 22, 1998 in Sequim, Washington. Henry was born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin on March 3, 1899 to Hans Henry and Josephine Marie (Olsen)Kiel.Henry was born prematurely, weighing only a few pounds, he was not expected to survive. His loving mother made a bed for him out of a shoe box and kept him warm by the oven door, despite tremendous odds Henry began to grow and thrive.
Henry spent his childhood in Ferndale, Washington. He began his educational experience at Alder Grove a 2 room school house containing 95 students. When coming to the eighth grade he had to pass a two day test, both oral and written.If successful he would then be allowed to atend High School.
This was a real accomplishment,and Henry was the first in his class and in his family to achieve this.
A letter came from Olympia allowing Henry to attend High School.Henry's father needed him to remain on the family farm. Although Henry was disappointed, he remained on the family farm, from the time he was fourteen until at the age of seventeen when he was allowed to resume his education. Henry completed high school at the Pacific Lutheran Academy in Tacoma.
Like many other young Scandinavians of the time, Henry spent his summers fishing in Alaska. For 10 seasons he fished throughout southern Alaska as well as Pudget Sound.
He completed his education by attending the University of Washington where he received a bachelor of Science Degree with majors in Botony and Zoology. Henry's graduate work included studies at Pacific University, Western Washington University,and Oregon State College.
Henry began teaching in Port Angeles at Roosevelt High School as a Biology teacher in 1929, where he was a well liked and respected teacher untill 1964.
Henry met and married Edna Luetta Svinth,the second of thirteen children born to Mary Edna Binder Morgan & Rev Hans Nielsen Houga Svinth.
They met at Pacific Luteran College and were married on December 26, 1931,Edna Luetta the great great granddaughter of Quaton, a Nisqually Indian woman.They married and were blessed by the birth of 4 children.David Morgan on 20 Oct 1935.Mary Louise (Earl Cowley)on 11 Aug 1937.Charles on 12 Apr 1941. And Karsten Edward on 24 Jul 1946
During World War Two Henry served in the Washington Home Guard.He worked for the fiberboard mill, starting during the shortage of workers during the war,working spare time and weekends for ten years.
Henry's beloved son David Morgan was accidentally shot and died on 27 Feb 1951. Henry lost Luetta on 23 Nov 1958.Karsten Edward died at the tender age of 15, on 3 Jun 1961 and Charles Henry died 28 Jun 1995.
Following Luetta's death, Henry married Hazel Porter in 1960. After retirement both Hazel & Henry were hired by Crown Zellerbach, to go to Chilie in order to teach the plant managers children.
Henry and Hazel spent two wonderful years immersed in a different culture and Henry saw so much of South America and was able to impart to them the fact that we are all related, We are all one people..
Henry spent his last years in the Sequim, Fifth avenue retirement home, He was the oldest living resident of the home at that time, as he turned 98 he remembered more than most of us have ever forgotten.
