Descendant of Oregon Pioneers and World War II Veteran.
The descendant of Oregon Pioneers, Robert Burkhart was the son of Robert James Burkhart (1900-1955) and Ruth E. (Marshall) Burkhart (1902-1972), born in Albany, Linn County, Oregon on October 18th, 1923. He was raised in Albany along with his younger brother, William A., born October 3rd, 1925; following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy in Sept 1943. He was on the ship LCI 1055 eff. July, 1944 with the rank of SM3. After he was discharged, he applied to, then joined the Albany police department on April 1st of 1950, at the age of 27 yrs. He was promoted first to Sergeant, then to Captain in 1954. In 1958, he was sent to the FBI National Academy in Washington, D.C. where he graduated in the upper percentile of his class. In 1961, after 11 years on the department, he was named Albany's Chief of Police, a title he strode to live up to, working long hours and making any revisions he felt were needed to make the department a more modern and efficient law enforcement agency. He was happily married to Betty Geneva Jacobs (1923-1989) and the proud father of two sons, Robert Leroy, b.1950, and Larry James, b.1951. He was a happy man, doing a job that he loved. Then, tragedy struck on March 24th, 1970 when he died suddenly from a fatal heart attack at the age of only 46 years. It was totally unexpected and the entire town of Albany was in shock, especially his wife, Betty, who was now a widow, and his sons, who were now without a father. A memorial was held and attended by countless people not only from Albany, but from all over Oregon and thru out the United States. He was laid to rest at Willamette Memorial Park in Albany, Oregon. May he Rest In Peace Eternally.
He is my mother's 3rd cousin.
