Sally Wood was the daughter of Jonas Wood (1795-1843), and Avah "Avy" (Wasden) Wood (1788-1830), a widow. Sally and Jesse Lassitter were married June 13, 1827 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. He was a farmer with his property valued at $20,000 when the 1850 Census was taken; his eldest living son, Stephen, was also listed as a farmer. Their land, in the Bear Creek District of Kinston and Mosley Hall, Lenoir County, was valued in the 1860 Census at $44,800 with cash assets of $32,200 [note that the census was conducted on Jul 9, 1860, during harvest season]. They became the parents of eight children during their marriage: Lucy Jane (1828-1913), Susan (1830-1844), Stephen (1832-1872), Jesse W.(1836-1841), Thomas (1837-1862), Sally Ann (1840-1865), Jesse (1842-1846), and Jesse Jr. b.1847-?. What was so incredibly sad was that Susan and Jesse W. died in childhood and a brave son, Thomas, died fighting in the Civil War, in 1862. Young Sally Ann, who was 25 when she died, was unmarried and without children. The only sons who had children were Jesse Jr. and Stephen; Jesse Jr. (b. 1847*) married Ellen Ennis in 1874 and had three children, Robert B., Blannie E., and Hattie Elizabeth. Stephen, a father of four, had three children in a long term relationship wherein his fiance died before they married. Stephen then married once and one son was borne of that union. Two children from his 1st relationship died in childhood of illness (Mollie and Lucius). Stephen would die at the fairly young age of 40 yrs., leaving two sons, Thomas Lassiter Warters and his half brother, Stephen Lassiter. Thomas Lassiter Warters would go on to marry and be blessed with five daughters and one son. Stephen Lassiter would marry and be blessed with children, including a son he named Stephen Lassiter, who carry on the name. The only daughter who married was Lucy Jane, who married Moses Joyner. They had two sons and three daughters. They had a tobacco farm and raised their nephew (my great grandfather) Thomas Lassiter Warters, following the death of his father and willing the farm to him. He was able to make a living both growing tobacco and making fine cigars, Thanks to his aunt and uncle. Sally only lived to be 34 yrs. of age. She, her husband, Jesse, who lived to be 66, and most of their children are buried at the Jesse Lassitter Family Cemetery in LaGrange, Lenoir County of North Carolina. Stephen Lassiter is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange, Lenoir County of North Carolina as are his grandsons. [See their memorials for locations of their spouses and children.] I have yet to locate Jesse Jr., b.1847.

I am very grateful to K.Ned Beasley for locating Jesse & Sally Lassitter who are my 3rd generation great grandparents on my father's side. He was gracious enough to transfer their memorials to me, and, again, I thank him.
Also, Rose, a Find A Grave member, advised me that Lucy Ann Joyner's maiden name was actually Lassitter, so I've been able to make the needed connections, Thanks to her!
May 13, 2019 -- Rose has again assisted me in correcting information about our relatives. Jesse Jr. was born Feb 11, 1847, not in @1850. I have amended his date of birth in this memorial. She advised me that his date of birth was February 11, 1847, as recorded in the amended census of Lenoir Co., North Carolina by Russell King. Thank you again, Rose!!
