Mary Elizabeth Davidson was the 4th of eight children borne of the union of Hezekiah and Melissa Ann (Page) Davidson while they were living in Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois on February 26th, 1833. A cousin, Cpt. Albert Franklin Davidson (1819-1890), had 1st visited Oregon in 1845 with his brother, James Davidson, Jr. He had returned to his family in 1846, persuading his extended family in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri to go to the Oregon Territory in 1847 via the Southern Route. Mary was only 14 years of age when her family set out on the Oregon Trail across the Plains with Cpt. Albert Davidson leading the 48 wagons in the party. [This information found courtesy of Stephenie Flora's wonderfully informative documentation of the immigrants on the Oregon Trail from mainly @1840 to 1855. It can be found under oregonpioneers.com and also lists all of the Davidsons who were in the party in 1847.] It was a long journey of about 2,000 miles (depending upon which route was taken) and took about five months to complete. Along the way, Mary came to know Hugh McNary Waller, a native of Indiana who was 16 years her senior, having been born Sep 9, 1817. He was a minister of the Disciples of Christ Church and a teacher as well. Both he and the Davidsons had settled in Polk County in the Oregon Territory and he and Mary were married on Aug 18th, 1850 in Polk County. When the 1st Census taken in the Oregon Territory was taken on Oct 12th, 1850, I found the following entries, which were of great interest to me for both personal (family) and historical reasons.

[Approx. years of birth and Burch maiden name entered by me]
By 1860, the Waller family had grown in size to include a total of two children and the family lived in Gold, Polk Co., Oregon [Oregon had gained statehood on Feb 14, 1859]. [Note: I've not been able to find any township or post office in 1800's Polk County with the name of "Gold", haven't ever even heard of it prior to this census].
Census taken June 11, 1860.
Gold Precinct, Polk County, Oregon
Waller, Hugh M., 27, b.IN. Clergyman. Property valued at $8,000. Cash $4140. [Note: for some reason, many people listed their families by initials only during the 1860, 1870 and/or 1880 Censuses.]
Waller, M.E., age 6, b.Ill. [error, should be 26 as it was his wife, Mary Elizabeth]

daughter: Waller, M.A., 6 months,b.OR. [Mary J.]
[brother] Waller, T.C., 18,b.Ill.[Thomas]
[brother] Waller, J.H., 27,b.Ill. Laborer [most likely George]
As of 1870, all of the Waller children had been born and the family's town had been renamed to Eola [I believe].

Hugh M. Waller's brother, George G. Waller, age 39, lived adjacent to their farm. He was now a Merchant, dealing in Dry Goods. George G., was 39, valued his property at $600 and had cash of $1900. Both he and his wife, Mary, 35, were natives of Illinois. As of 1870, they had six children, all of whom had been born in Oregon. They were Oliver, 14, Emily, 13, Lorin, 11, Ada, 9, Minnie, 3, and Lulu, 9 months.
The last census that included both Hugh and Mary Waller was the 1880 Census taken on June 15, 1880. The family had moved to Monmouth, Polk County, Oregon and were now living in a new dwelling. Hugh was now 60 yrs. of age and still listed himself as a Preacher, but he was also listed as being disabled. Mary, his wife, was now 47.
Son: Thomas C., 20, was a College Student.
Daughter: Etta M., 13, was a Student,[listed as a college student in error.]
Daughter: Ida, 10, was at home [and most likely attending school, also.]

Mary Elizabeth Waller died Dec 17th, 1889 in Monmouth, Polk Co., Oregon at the age of 56 years, 9 months and 19 days. She was buried at Hilltop Cemetery in Independence, Polk Co., Oregon, and a headstone was in two pieces when it was photographed next to her's. It appears that an "m" is on it -- for Melissa, perhaps?***
Hugh McNary Waller died four years after his wife, on Feb 25, 1893, and was also buried at Hilltop Cemetery.
Son Thomas Carter Waller married Mary Agnes Froman. They were the parents of three children and lived in Price, Linn Co., Oregon. He died in 1916 and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. Daughter Etta M. married Edwin Roland Huston. Their son, John Waller Huston, would drown while in Alaska in 1927. Etta died 10 days after Edwin's birth in 1895. Etta and her son were buried in Riverside Cemetery and Edwin R. Huston was buried at in Albany's Masonic Cemetery, all of them in Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. Ida never married, living most of her adult life in Portland, Oregon. She is also buried at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn Co., Oregon.
And so, three generations of Oregonians - both pioneers and native born, passed from their lives to Paradise. May they all Rest in Peace forever.

My relationship to Mary Elizabeth (Davidson) Waller:
I am a 2nd great grand niece to Mary. She is my maternal great grandmother's aunt (Nellie Olivia Burkhart Royce Baker Hall).
Mary Elizabeth, one of eight children born to Hezekiah and Melissa Ann "Lucy Ann" (Page) Davidson, was a sister of Melissa Ann [also called Lucy Ann] Davidson, who married my great, great grandfather, Leander Columbus Burkhart. Mary and Melissa's parents, Hezekiah and Melissa "Lucy Ann" (Page) Davidson are my great, great, great maternal grandparents. They all had strong religious values and strong faith in Our Lord God. They were descendants of Alexander Davidson who had fled Scotland due to religious persecution of Protestants in the early 1700's (c.1725). More Davidsons would leave Scotland following the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
