Carl Clifford Clemons was one of two children borne to Grace (Shaw) Clemons and Bert Clemons in June, 1918. His sister, Florence Ruby, was born in Jan., 1915. Their mother, Grace, b. Nov 14, 1892 in Yakima, WA., died Dec 29, 1919 when the children were very young. I have been completely unsuccessful in locating their father, Bert Clemons. He relinquished custody of the children to their maternal grandparents by the time the 1920 U S Census was taken Feb 6, 1920. At that time, Harvey Shaw, Grace's father, was a Hay farmer, although he was 66 yrs. old. His wife, referred to as "Rhody", was 47 yrs. old. Their son, Amos, was 25 yrs. old and helping with farm labor. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and died in a tragic accident at Ft. Steilacoom, in Pierce County, Washington on May 8th, 1922. Carl and Florence were living with their grandparents by that time. By 1930, Harvey was 76 yrs. old and no longer listed any earnings when the census was taken that year on Apr 24, 1930. Their home address was now listed as Swan Ave., Learningburg, Yakima Co., WA., valued at $1500. Harvey was retired and Rhoda cared for the grandchildren who were now entering their teen years. Their grandfather, Harvey Shaw, would die in 1934, leaving Rhoda a widow to care for the grandchildren when the 1940 census was taken on Apr 8, 1940. Their address was now listed as 1217 N.14th Ave., Extension of Swan Ave., E. Fruitvale, Yakima Co., WA. The home was now paid for as there was no more mortgage. Carl was gaining clerical experience at an Employment (illegible-Office?). Carl's sister went on to marry John James Smith, who died on Jan 14, 1969. Carl entered the Army Air Corps as a 2LT. and flew a bomber over the Philippine Islands with the 75th Bomber Squadron, 42nd Bomber Group. He was listed as Missing In Action in early Apr 1944 and then as killed in action on Apr 12, 1944. His name was entered on the memorial at the Memorial Cemetery at Manila, America Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines. May he Rest in Peace forever in calm seas.
