My great grandfather, William Thomas Baker, was originally from Louisville, Kentucky. He was one of 3 sons (and five daughters) of Samuel Hodgdon (1817-1901) and Mary Ann (Howell) (1822-1906) Baker, also of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. In 1880, the U S Census for Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, taken on June 4, 1880, has him living in Louisville in a new dwelling, working as a carriage painter, and married to a woman named Isis, age 32, born in Indiana. There is also a son, Samuel N., age 8, born in Kentucky, who is at school. There is no record of either an Isis or Samuel N. Baker with those birth dates after this census that I have found.**
William Thomas Baker traveled to Oregon after 1880, settling in Albany, where he met and married Nellie Olivia (Burkhart) Royce, a young widow, on July 21, 1891, in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. They had one daughter, Pearl Laura Baker, b.Mar 2, 1895. William was a carriage maker and painter by trade. He died of "consumption" (Tuberculosis) on March 14, 1900, leaving his wife Nellie, again, a widow.
As of March 21, 2017, while going thru my mother's genealogy paperwork, I found proof that he did not die in Oregon, but that he passed away in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky where he is buried at Cave Hill Cemetery with his other family members. His little girl had just turned 5 years old when her father died. I do not know when he returned to Kentucky, and, perhaps a family member came to Oregon to travel with him back to Louisville, but this is something my mother never told me, although the certificate from Kentucky State Dept. of Health is dated November 22, 1968. Either way, I am one of Pearl Laura Baker's granddaughters and she never spoke of him or the loss of her father in all of the 24 years I knew her. I wonder now if she was aware of her father's 1st family, though I sincerely doubt it unless her mother spoke to her about it. I also believe it was a very painful memory for her.
**The other information I found while looking around on Find a Grave back one week ago today (May 13, 2017), is that I found Samuel N. Baker, my grandmother's other half brother, and the other child of William Thomas Baker. His memorial was entered onto Find a Grave Dec 16, 2014. He is listed as "the son of William Baker and Iris Cannon" and, per Suzy & Rob, who created his memorial, he "moved to Arizona about 10 months before his death,. He worked in Collections for a Printing Company. He {also} never married." He is interred at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona. I have submitted a link to his father, am not able to locate his mother, listed as "Isis Stuart" on his death certificate (which she signed). He died of pneumonia with heart problems contributing to his death.

I've now found William's 1st wife and Samuel's mother, Isis Cannon Stuart, who is buried at the same cemetery as her son. Thank you to Suzy and Rob who verified she was also buried at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery and went on to create her memorial.
May they all Rest in Peace.
