William was the son of Arustus Hayden Gholson and Rebecca (Kelly) Gholson, born in Missouri on December 11, 1837. He is listed as Carrol Gholson, a single man, in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, in the 1860 Census taken July 31, 1860. He is listed as a farmer with land valued at $800 and cash of $1500. He married Sarah Dodson on Feb 22, 1861. The 1900 census lists that they still had 4 children living at home and they were the parents of eight children, all still alive when the census was conducted on June 11, 1900 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. He, his wife and children are living in town, renting their home. He and his wife state they have been married for 34 years [which is an error, they have been married for 39 years]. William C., b.Dec 1837, MO., is a Wire Fence Builder. Wife Sarah is b.Feb 1842, KY. His children in the home are:
Georgia L., b. Sep 1870, GA. She is a stenographer.
Marcus C., b. Feb 1877, GA. is also a wire fence builder.
Ben Hill, b. Aug 1882, GA., is a drugs salesman.
George L., b. Dec 1885, OH., is "at school".
Other children no longer living with their parents but borne of their union are:
Laura Cathron, b. Feb 1862, KY.
Charles Payne, b. Jan 1868, KY.
Leonard, b. 1870, d. 1870, GA. [twin to Georgia L.] and
Willie Mae, b. Apr 1873, N.C.(?)

I have searched for quite some time for censuses for 1870 and 1880, without any luck which is quite frustrating, considering the fact that William Carroll Gholson died Apr 28, 1906 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio; he was 68 yrs. old. Sarah buried her husband at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. She lived until Feb 4th, 1923, when she, too, died and was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. May they Rest, Peacefully, together in Paradise.

William Carroll Gholson was one of my paternal great, great grandfathers. His daughter, Willie Mae, married my great grandfather, Thomas Lassiter Warters. One of their five daughters, Ruth Warters, married Robert Leon Webb, Sr. One of their three sons, the eldest, was named Robert Leon Webb, Jr. He was born in 1924 in Georgia and married Patricia Jean Taylor during World War II, in 1944. I was their 2nd of three daughters. My mother died Dec 28, 2002 and my father has just passed, on July 9th, 2015.
