Anna Marie & I were best friends when we were kids. She was a year younger but we were in the same grade because her birthday was before the cut-off point. She lived on the other side of the street at the other end of the street. It wasn't a very long street. We used to play with our Ginny dolls in my attic and ride our bikes and play at her house too. Her dad was from Denmark and her mom from Scotland and I loved to hear them talk. I especially loved her mom's accent.

After I went away to college I lost track of her; she went to Murray State College in Kentucky, but only stayed for a year, I think, and then got married and also started smoking. Her aunt told me her husband abused her; I don't know for sure. The last time I spoke to her on the phone she sounded sad. She finally divorced him. I heard a few years later she had died. I think it was lung cancer, but I could be wrong.

When I spoke to her she told me both her parents had died. I don't remember how her mom died, but I know Anna Marie found her dad under his tractor after it had rolled over on him in a field he had been plowing. How awful.

According to her obituary, she had been a career caregiver, helping people with disabilities become independent in caring for themselves. It doesn't surprise me; she was a very caring person.

I wish I could have done something to help her, but there was nothing I knew how to do. Rest in peace, Anna Marie. I'm glad I finally found you again.
