Elbert Gates McPhail, Sr., 82, a long-time resident of Comanche, Oklahoma, died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, March 15, 1971 in a Duncan, Oklahoma hospital after a four week illness.

He was born December 5, 1888 in Copiah County, Mississippi. He had lived in Comanche since 1907, moving here from east Texas. He was a rural mail carrier for 38 years, retiring in 1958. On May 24, 1913, he married Bertha Frances Brewer in Comanche.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Comanche for 63 years.

Survivors include his wife of the home, a daughter, Mrs. Frances Ireland of Lawton, Oklahoma; three sons, Elbert Gates McPhail, Jr. of Duncan, Oklahoma, Preston Brewer McPhail of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Arthur Miles McPhail of Norman, Oklahoma. He is, also, survived by a sister, Mrs. Grace Mobley of Comanche and 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Comanche with the Rev. O.L. Harvey, Comanche officiating. The Rev. Jay Smith, pastor of the Patterson Avenue Baptist Church will assist.

Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Morehead Funeral Home. Bearers will be Robert Hanna, Dale Davidson, H.A. McCormick, Jakie Vanbebber, Bruce Lindsay, and C.E. Morgan.

The family has suggested those withing to contribute can donate to the cancer fund.
